However, off late, along with having the right talent, one also needs to have a good profile and a good brand image in the virtual space so that the recruiters have a fair idea about one’s background, experience and knowledge bank. Not only has technology helped in creating an apt profile and building the right brand image but it has also helped in exploring new opportunities, creating fresh projects, complete transactions and eventually earn. Apart from providing a good user experience, they enable smooth communication between the freelancer and the client. Right from connecting with each other to sharing updates to making payments to leaving reviews, technology has given a great boost to the freelance industry. 8 Reasons to Hire a Freelance SEO Specialist

In recent years, becoming visible online has become essential to having a successful business. Many companies are more familiar with traditional advertising, like TV ads and email blasts, and don’t know where or how to start online advertising. While having a well-designed webpage and active social media accounts is important, landing your site on the first page of Google search results is the best way to reach customers. You can tackle Google on your own , but it will take time, energy, and money, and you may still not get the best results. What Does an SEO Specialist Do? An SEO specialist ensures your website is optimized for Google search results. They know which keywords to use to get your site on the first page of search results, and they know all the tricks of the trade. While much of SEO revolves around using the correct keywords, it also involves feeding the Google algorithm with the correct number of links, regular new content, and images. The Google search engine is complicated, and the algorithms change frequently. Instead of struggling to do it all yourself, here are eight reasons to hire a freelance SEO specialist . 1. Save Time Although you can teach yourself SEO marketing strategies, it can take years to become an expert. Even once you’ve learned the basics, you will probably make mistakes at first, which takes even more time to correct. In business, time is money. Instead of wasting your time learning SEO, hire a reputable freelance SEO specialist. You can work with them closely to ensure that they understand your company and then let them do their work while you attend to your business. 2. Get On The First Page Sooner The sooner you get your site on the first page of the search results, the faster your organic traffic increases. More visitors to your site mean more conversions, and an experienced SEO specialist knows how to target the correct demographic. If you choose to learn how to do SEO yourself, you may not see results for months. 3. Focus On Other Aspects of Your Business Saving time by working with an SEO specialist means you can focus on other aspects of your business. Turn your energy toward improving your product or speeding up production. If you deal with customers frequently, you could spend the time you save updating your customer service. 4. Keep Your Website Updated Many SEO specialists also help you keep your website updated. The Google algorithms change regularly , and competitors may overtake your position on the search results page. Therefore, your SEO specialist monitors your progress and updates your website to reflect changes in the algorithms. 5. Get An Outsider’s Opinion While no one knows your business better than you, sometimes an outside perspective can identify problems easier. An outsider may notice immediately that an explanation isn’t clear for a product or that your color scheme doesn’t quite work. An SEO specialist views your website through a marketing lens and […]

Calling All Freelancers, Here’s How To Score A Pay Rise

You heard it here first—you deserve a pay rise! We saw over a million people lose their jobs due to COVID and it was a total punishment for women around the world who were disproportionately affected. COVID has seen many people step into freelancing for the first time or fire up their side hustle to still make money honey. But are you charging what you are worth, or are you just making ends meet in these tough times? While some freelance job sites are built around cheap labour and offshore options, you might have noticed we are in a recession… so Australian businesses supporting local talent, gender equality and paying competitively is key to rebuilding our economy and getting everyone back to work quicker—quick spread the word. Everyone deserves to be paid what they are worth after the year that was, but 2021 is also the year women especially need to get competitive and be an advocate for themselves when it comes to charging competitively, or we will see pay parity slip further through our fingers. Asking for more money can make for awkward conversations, especially if this is your first-time consulting, so here is some advice on how to approach it with your clients and to be confident in your ask. #1 Calculate Your Rate To Be Competitive The first step is to identify your annual salary expectations and break that down into hourly and daily rates, but also make sure it matches your skills, experience and value. Join freelance networks so you can get support from other people in your industry (both male and female) to ensure your rates are competitive and you aren’t coming in too low. Don’t forget to add super, tax, leave and business expenses on top, so you aren’t eating into your profits. #2 Learn To Pivot Be flexible so you don’t create barriers for people who wish to engage your services or price yourself out of the market. Know your hourly, daily, weekly, retainer and project rates so that you capture all opportunities. #3 Know Your Worth Make sure you’re clear on what value you offer and what your client’s needs are, so you can ensure those two areas meet in the middle. There should be no question that what you bring to the table is worth what you are charging. If someone is simply after cheap labour, they are not your type of your people. #4 Don’t Forget The Extras Add into your contracts an annual review of fees, so clients are expecting an increase in advance. We are big fans of the rollover clause too, so you don’t have to keep renegotiating terms. If you need a great contract template, there are some great freelancer memberships out there like Freelancing Gems who offer the business templates to help grow your business, available here. #5 Aim High Start your negotiations slightly higher so that you have somewhere to go. Everyone likes to negotiate a great deal, including your potential clients. If […]

Do I need a UTR number for my theatre art contract?

Freelancer’s Question: Am I required to have a UTR number if I’m working as a freelance artist with a theatre company, on a contract that will pay me a maximum of £10,000 for the year’s work? I’d like to know — if I had a higher revenue and/or profit , would this affect whether I need a UTR number? And If I changed from sole trader to a limited company , would this colour any requirement for me to have a UTR? Or once you have a UTR is it for life, and not just for Christmas!? Expert’s Answer : Firstly, it is important to understand what a UTR number is. So just what is a UTR? A UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) helps HM Revenue & Customs identify and process tax returns against the correct taxpayer’s records. When a UTR is required As you are a self-employed freelancer in the UK, you are required to have a UTR. The number is unique to you and your business — it will never change. To receive your UTR number from HMRC, you will first need to register as self-employed and then you’ll need to register for your Self-Assessment tax return. This becomes a requirement once you start earning more than £1,000 from self-employment during a tax year, which you will more than easily be doing with the contract you refer to. UTR is indeed for life, not just for Christmas Then consider, your self-assessment tax return is due every year as of April 6th with a deadline of January 31 st , and it summarises your earnings for HMRC so that they can accurately tax you. And it’s a good question you ask but no, your level of earnings and/or profit does not affect your need of a UTR number. This is your personal UTR for life – and definitely not just for Christmas or the New Year! You’re not alone of course. The self-employed are not the only individuals required to make a self-assessment return each year; company directors, people with foreign income and those taxpayers whose income exceeds £100,000 a year are a few examples of income outside of PAYE that need to submit to HMRC through self-assessment. A new UTR if you set up a limited company You raise the prospect of setting up a limited company. Well, some sole traders make the decision to incorporate their business and become a limited company to, among other reasons, provide them some protection in the event that things go awry. As long as the company formation and director’s conduct are both in line with the Companies Act, the director’s personal assets will not be at risk as a limited liability company. And while the company – should you set one up — will gain a new UTR, yours will remain for your personal return as a director of the limited company. UTR, one of three fundamentals to staying on HMRC’s good side Keep in mind, if you have income outside […]

Questions to Ask Before Hiring Your First Freelance Writer

Freelance writers can be an invaluable asset in creating effective marketing content. The problem many people often face is separating the good freelancers from the bad. Here are 6 key questions to ask that will help you hire a great freelance writer (and avoid the not so great ones). Let’s get started. The Key Questions When evaluating freelancers , it’s important to know the right questions to ask. Use open-ended questions like the ones listed below to help gauge how experienced and suitable a freelancer is for a job. Their answers, whether they be vague or detailed will be incredibly revealing about the type of writer they are. What Type of Content Can You Write? On the surface, this might appear to be an obvious question but it is in fact an essential one. There are many freelance writers for hire who specialize in certain types of content but aren’t great at others. You could for instance encounter a writer who’s adept at writing blog posts but can’t write business proposals or press releases. It’s important to hone in on what the freelance writer’s limitations are before you decide to hire them. What Industries Do You Specialize In? Many freelance writers often do work in more than one industry. However, if they claim that they can write in any or every industry then they’re likely spreading themselves too thin. With writers like this, it’s more the case that they are average at writing in those industries but they can’t excel in any one area. A good freelance writer should know their strengths and weaknesses and be readily available to admit them. If you encounter a freelance writer who makes such claims then ask them to provide writing samples to confirm their abilities. If you’re looking for a writer specializing in ecommerce, someone who can help you produce content for your online store, make sure that they have product pages in their portfolio. What Writing Styles and Tones Are You Comfortable With? A good writer knows how to adapt their tone to make it fit with the company they represent. Look at the words they use to see if it matches the tone your business is going for. If a freelance writer can match your tone then it’s likely they’re capable of doing so for other clients as well. This is a sign of an experienced writer that you’ll feel confident handing work off to. What’s Your Research Methodology? Regardless of how skilled they claim to be, no writer should claim that they don’t need to do research. This is important to note because a freelancer that works with you long term will likely face challenging topics that they’ll lack knowledge of. So, ask them about how they learn about a topic and what resources do they favor using. Their answers will reveal whether they have a set process in place for learning or if they just rely on their own knowledge. Can You Optimize Content for Search Engines? Knowing […]

Why hiring freelancers helps your startup grow

The European freelance industry has skyrocketed in the last few years — and there are now around 11m people working in the freelance economy. Among those making a career out of freelancing in countries like France, Germany, and Spain, 52% have a Master’s degree and five or more years of professional experience. As a result, more businesses are becoming interested in hiring top freelancers. According to a survey of 2,000 businesses conducted by global freelance platform Fiverr , 52% said they are allocating more budget to freelance services. Marketing, IT and tech, and business consulting rank among the most common professions in the freelancer market. Startups — especially those at the early stage — can take advantage of the talented pool of on-demand web developers, graphic designers, copywriters, and more to complete projects and grow their businesses. Here are four reasons why startups should consider utilising freelancers: “A big part of startup life is getting things turned around quickly, and freelancers are well-suited to this.” 1. Freelancers get to work fast A big part of startup life is getting things turned around quickly, and freelancers are well-suited to this. It’s typically much quicker to find a freelancer than a full-time hire, thanks to freelancing platforms like Fiverr which allow you to search for a freelancer with the skills you need, from web developers to graphic designers. Because freelancers arrive with the skills needed for the job (unlike many full-time hires), they’ll spend less time training and more time doing. 2. Freelancers help take the pressure off startups Founders can reduce pressure on themselves and their teams by bringing in on-demand talent for key projects. Freelancers can work on things like optimising SEO or creating digital advertisements while founders focus on growing the business. Freelancers can also help startups increase productivity and growth by working remotely across different time zones. While you’re sleeping, your freelance colleagues can get things done from afar. 3. Startups can save money with freelancers Full-time hires are more expensive than freelancers. By hiring the latter, you don’t have to pay for benefits like health insurance, sick pay, or workers’ compensation. You also have control over how long you need them for. Most freelancers are seasoned remote workers even when not in pandemic mode. This can help reduce costs around office space and work equipment like laptops, which most freelancers will already have. “Most freelancers are seasoned remote workers even when not in pandemic mode.” The cash saved from hiring freelancers can help you to invest in other areas of the business, such as marketing. 4. There are great tools to work productively with freelancers It’s getting easier than ever to work with freelancers, thanks to new business tools. Platforms like Fiverr Business help startups partner with on-demand talent across the world — whether you’re in need of a marketeer, SEO analyst, or someone else. You can collaborate on the platform by brainstorming with freelancers, sharing information about projects, and managing your budgets so you can […]
