With U.S. gig workers accounting for more than $1.4 trillion in income by the end of 2018, it’s safe to say the gig economy is becoming a mainstream part of the global economy. In fact, the share of those in the gig economy with highly specialized skills rose to 32.3 percent in Q4 2018 — a 12.2 percent increase over the previous quarter. In the Q4 2018 edition of the Gig Economy Index ™ , in collaboration with Hyperwallet , PYMNTS surveyed more than 10,000 American workers — including 3,000 gig economy professionals — to find out where and why they’re choosing jobs, as well as how factors like payments and flexibility influence that process. The Index also looked at how digital marketplaces are changing the way the gig economy is expanding. Digital marketplaces have continued to play a critical role in how workers find source jobs. Upwork Changes How It Engages With Freelancers, But What Are The Implications?

Summary Freelancers will no longer have free access to the platform; Upwork does not consider freelancer retention metrics essential; It remains to be seen whether extra revenues will outweigh some drawbacks of this action on the part of the company. In October last year, when Upwork ( UPWK ) was already a public company, I wrote a valuation piece, which consisted of two parts ( here and here ), in which I showed company’s value was around $14 and that it was overvalued at $20 price it was trading at that time. Six months through and one 10K report, nothing has changed fundamentally, in my view, to re-assess that narrative; nor has there been any impressive performance on the part of the company. Interestingly, and perhaps due to unimpressive revenue growth rates, just yesterday, Upwork CEO Stephane Kasriel announced of an impending change in the way the company was going to engage with freelancers going forward. With this change in mind, it is interesting to consider what repercussions, if any, this may or will have for the company. What is changing? According to the announcement, starting in May this year, freelancers will have to pay to obtain the so-called ‘Connects’ tokens to gain access to the platform. Historically, freelancers received 60 free Connects each month, which they could then use to send proposals to the projects posted by clients (with the “cost” of sending those proposals ranging from 1-6 Connects per each proposal). While freelancers were able to purchase more Connects, if they needed, it was not necessary or required, given that 60 may have been just enough for them. With this privilege comes a cost in the form of Upwork charging a tiered ‘take-rate’ as a platform, where freelancers and clients meet, which, on average, stands at around 13%. Now, however, freelancers will have to pay $0.15 per Connect on top of that, and this is where things are getting interesting. What sort of issue are we talking about? An essential thing to begin with is to look at who the typical freelancer is. According to the latest 10K report and S-1 report filed during the IPO, freelancers come from the following regions: While it is the case that the United States still accounts for the greatest proportion of freelancers, this is so only on individual-country basis. Two of the countries that follow, India and Pakistan, have the same revenue contribution when combined, and there are more countries with low per-capita incomes in the ‘Rest of the World’ category (for some background look at this link ). Meanwhile, revenue generation by client shows a completely different picture: Most of the revenue generated from clients comes from the US. ICT freelancers in highest demand in 2018

The ICT sector was the most in-demand industry vertical in Australia for freelance talent in 2018, according to the latest data from freelance marketplace Expert360 . The Australia-based freelance management platform and marketplace also revealed that its platform’s highest-performing individual freelancer earned $330,000 during the year. Within the IT and telecommunications vertical, the review also identified a significant increase in demand in the technology strategy, IT project and program management and technical business analysis categories compared to last year. During 2018, the most in-demand freelance skill at the junior and mid level was project and program management, followed by change management, business strategy and transformation, business/data analytics, and data science/big data. At the mid to senior level, the most in-demand skills were program management, IT project management, business strategy and transformation, procurement and category management, customer strategy, and marketing strategy. Technology strategists were earning an average of $2200 per day on the platform, with business strategists earning $1400, project and program managers $900 per day, data and business analysts $800 per day and marketing specialists $850 per day. “It’s not surprising that technology specialists were the most in-demand in 2018,” Expert360 CEO Bridget Loudon said. “An exponential number of businesses are going through large-scale digital transformation programs and are reliant on top contingent talent to drive this process.” In the year ahead, Expert360 is predicting that the most in-demand freelance skills will include strategy consultants, agile coaches, project and program managers, and business analysts.
